Battalion of Heroes: The Calgary Highlanders in
World War Two by Doctor David Jay Bercuson (Calgary Highlanders Regimental Funds
Foundation, 1994) 297 pages, 48 pages of illustrations and maps. ISBN: 0969461615
Not a companion to the original WW II history by Major Roy Farran
(which is long out of print), this book was researched completely from scratch by Dr.
David Bercuson, and is based on ample primary sources including many veteran interviews.
This book is a no-holds-barred look at the battalion's successes - and tragedies -
during six years of war.
The Calgary Highlanders mobilized for war on 1 September
1939, and returned to Canada at the end of 1945, having served for 10 months in combat in
NW Europe, including some of the bloodiest fighting of the European campaign at Normandy,
the Scheldt, and the Rhineland. Over 400 Calgary Highlanders were left behind in
Commonwealth cemeteries throughout France and Holland.
Researching family members is made easy by the appendices -
which include the official Army listing of all fatal and non-fatal casualties suffered by
the Regiment, including service numbers. |

Gallant Canadians : The Story of the Tenth Canadian
Infantry Battalion, 1914-1919 by Daniel G. Dancocks (Calgary Highlanders
Regimental Funds Foundation, 1990) 251 pages, lavishly illustrated throughout with photos
and maps ISBN: 0969461607
The
Calgary Highlanders today perpetuate the history of the Tenth Battalion, Canadian
Expeditionary Force. The 10th Battalion were the leading troops in the very first
Canadian offensive action of the First World War, and participated in every major Canadian
engagement from Second Ypres in April 1915 to the last 100 days in 1918. Some 1,313
Tenth Battalion soldiers gave their lives in the trenches.
The late Daniel Dancocks, an esteemed military historian
specializing in the First World War, was specially commissioned to produce this volume,
and weaves together first hand accounts with primary documentation to produce an eminently
readable account of the battalion's war service; from the ignominy of having a soldier
shot for desertion, to the remarkable day at Hill 70 where no less than sixty soldiers won
the Military Medal for outstanding heroism in a single battle - a record never rivaled in
the annals of Canadian military history.
